How did it go?

Facebook and Digg are a must. You need to learn the fine art of linkbait and how to utilize social networking and bookmarking. Myspace is huge, and youtube gets twice as much pageviews a day then Google itself.

Hi Beth, thanks for this…and also to everyone else who has taken part in this, really great to have such wide conversation on not only my blog, but Facebook, Twitter, Seesmic and the old fashioned face to face communications too! It has raised a lot of interest amongst not only amongst related networks, and non profits groups, but also people out there helping to support these nonprofit organisations.

Beth - I’ll be discussing updates soon on where we are and how we want you to take part (if possible!), and also we’ll be creating a site / base for useful links including the likes of Chris Brogans Social Media toolkit amongst others. If anyone has a great set of links that are useful to others, leave them here!

Others who have responded, if you are interested in taking part in some way (would like to show the benefit of some of these tools we talk about and use ourselves, and show them in action!) let me know.

Marc Osten from Summit Collaborative contacted today also about running our sessions side by side as he too is presenting about online communities at the conference. Really feel that this conference could be a great one to really get the UK moving forward (finally!) with the way we communicate, connect and join in for the nonprofit sector here. Let’s give it our best shot!

Very excited!

(Posted this over on your blog too David)

David - your points about membership raises the very questions I am thinking about and that face organisations like mine (NAVCA) at the moment.
Do we feel threatened and even cheated out of memberships (money!) by Social Networking 'pseudo-membership' sites or do we re-invent traditional membership organisations to do new things for those who choose to align themselves with our stated values?
Will be interested to see how this develops and the discussions at the CR conference!

Laura - my thoughts follow on from our discussions in the ICT Hub Cafe.
Firstly its about the message - what are we trying to say
Secondly its about the audience - who are we saying it to
Thirdly its about the medium - what tools can be used to get the message across

For example, our conversation in the cafe revolved around the campaign we were embarking on (message), the people we wanted to tell (audience of old people or young people) and the way to tell it (medium perhaps SagaZone or Bebo).

To bring this into UK VCS context there are now CVS' using blogs and podcasts etc. to record events and to talk to their members (http://watfordgap.wordpress.com/cvs-blogroll/). So to tie in David's thoughts about membership, these could be the bonus features to encourage 'those with views aligned with ours' to call themselves our members.

This is a bit of a ramble off the top of my head (I can re-think to help you at the CR conf), but what I am sure about is that if you are a UK CVS/LIO and you bury your head in the sand and push on relentless with say JUST a paper based newsletter (NOT you Laura!) and ignore your supporters who are busily social networking away you will struggle to survive.

Whew! Well you asked!
